This paper will aim to investigate Joyce's Ulysses, the paradigmatic urban novel, in juxtaposition with Huxley's dystopian Brave New World and Alasdair Gray's ambiguous Lanark on the theoretical basis of modern urban planning, environmental psychology, and De Certeau's analyses of modern urban living. This analysis investigates the effects of the nuclear bomb and disciplinary systems on humanity, and explores the ways through which humans have become dehumanized in Ape and Essence. Huxley shows after war, the totalitarian government employed disciplinary ways to control and manipulate people. In this interdisciplinary study, we observe dystopia in Ape and Essence as a consequence of Foucauldian disciplinary system.

I argue that Brave New World depicts a dystopian systematic control of mind and body through eugenic engineering, biological conditioning, hypnopaedia, sexual satisfaction, and drugs so as to keep the worldians completely controlled, collectivized and contented in a totalitarian society. In this paper, I discuss the manipulations of minds and bodies with reference to Foucault's biopower and disciplinary systems that make the citizens of the world state more profitable and productive. Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (1932) is a nightmarish depiction of a post-human world where human beings are mass-produced to serve production and consumption.
